German Awards - German States - Hesse - Grand Duchy



On August 14, 1806, the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt was proclaimed the Grand Duchy of Napoleon I. This was preceded by Napoleon's high military contingent and entry into the Rhine Union as an ally of Napoleon. In 1815 they were joined by other areas such as Mainz, Worms and Bingen. The Grand Duchy joined the German Union. After the defeat of 1866, Hesse was forced to cede some territories to Prussia. Oberhessen joined the North German Union and in 1871 Hesse as a whole became a federal state within the German Empire.
The grand dukes were Ludwig I before Ludwig IV and Ernst Ludwig the last.
The last Grand Duke, Ernst Ludwig, was also deposed in 1918, and the people's state of Hesse was proclaimed.
