The Ernst Ludwig Eleanor Cross was established by the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig on March 23, 1910. The awards were awarded to Hessians and foreigners who made excellent money on charitable care. The cross was awarded on a carrier without a ribbon. The award included an award decree (diploma) and a copy of the charters. Men wore the award under the order buckle, ladies wore a cross on their left shoulder. Failed to request reward. Awarding took place at the discretion of the Grand Duke and his wife. After the death of the leper, the cross was subject to return. The seal was made by Professor H. Jobst, a sculptor in Darmstadt. Production was handled by Carl Poellath's artistic imprinting in Schrobenhausen. The cross of Ernst Ludwig Eleanor was awarded only very sparingly. Sources indicate up to 1917 34 awards. The most famous carrier was Alice, Princess of Greece, born Battenberg.
