Fire department buckles were donated by the Federal Fire Association of Hesse in 1900. They are not to be confused with the 25-year and 40-year honorific presented by Grand Duke Ludwig IV. The buckles are modeled after the 1849 military service insignia. The division of years of service into 20, 15 and 10 was adopted. The buckles are silver for 20 years, silver for 15 years and iron for 10 years.
The award was presented to volunteer fire departments as well as professional firefighters after appropriate groundless service. Buckles for volunteer fire crews have red and white ribbons as the basis of the buckles, buckles for professional firefighters have purple and red ribbons. Buckles were made in different versions. There are buckles with a smooth and grainy background, as well as differences in the design of the helmet.
The buckle is rectangular in silver. Applied to a metal plate covered with an order ribbon. At the back is a horizontal pin.
