The general badge of honor "For Courage" was awarded from 1850 to 1889 with the image of Ludwig III. awarded with gold and silver. The gold medal was awarded only 7 times. The silver medal featured here, with 77 awards, is very rare. The medal was awarded to enlisted men for gallantry in war. The first awards took place on July 30, 1859 during the Italian Unification Wars. Early medals were still engraved with the carrier. The coin was minted by medalist Karl Friedrich Voigt, who worked at the Munich Royal Mint. The stamp cutter signature under the neck section disappeared by the end of the rolling period.
The general badge of honor was established on September 25, 1843 by Ludwig II. established as a civil badge of honor. It was no longer issued until his death in 1848. His son Ludwig III. November 14, 1849 awarded the medal his portrait and statutes. Persons without a special title were awarded for excellent merit, commendable deeds and exceptional achievements. Various advantages differ in the inscription on the reverse. The following inscriptions are known: - FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE -, - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE -, - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE -, - FOR COURAGE -, - FOR SAVING HUMAN LIVES - AND - FOR SAVING FROM MORTAL DANGER -. The font is 2-line, 3-line and 5-line. By 1853, the name and place of residence of the carrier were knocked out in the region. Early medals are slightly thicker and heavier than later ones without a bearer name. The inscription - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE - was granted until 1869, and after that it was replaced by the inscription - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE.
