Awards of Germany - Silver Medal of the Order of Ludevig 1859 with a regional inscription
The general badge of honor was established on September 25, 1843 by Ludwig II. established as a civil badge of honor. It was no longer issued until his death in 1848. His son Ludwig III. November 14, 1849 awarded the medal his portrait and statutes. Silver medals of merit awarded since the beginning of 1849 have been named since the Universal Badge of Honor. Since that time, Grand Duke Ludwig III. also awarded gold honorary civilian medals. On February 22, 1853, they were provided with statutes and then called the "Medal of Merit of the Order of Ludevig," and then the "Gold Medal of the Order of the Grand Duke of Hesse Ludevig." On October 25, 1859, silver merit medals were added to the Statute. Persons without a special title were awarded for excellent merit, commendable deeds and exceptional achievements. Various advantages differ in the inscription on the reverse. The following inscriptions are known: - FOR COURAGE -, - FOR FIFTY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE -, - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE -, - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE -, - FOR REPEATED SAVING OF HUMAN LIVES -, - FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE - AND - FOR MERITS -. The font is 2-line, 3-line and 5-line. Early medals are slightly thicker and heavier than later ones. The embossing of the early parts is deeper and sharper. The lugs were pointed and were later replaced by conventional lugs. The medals - FOR VALOUR - were awarded only 7 times in gold and 28 times in silver in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71. Medal - FOR CANCELLED RESCUE... - awarded only 1 time.
The inscription - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE - was granted until 1869, and after that it was replaced by the inscription - FOR MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE. The coin was minted by medalist Karl Friedrich Voigt, who worked at the Munich Royal Mint.
