The Military Medical Cross was established on August 25, 1870 by Grand Duke Ludwig III. for the war of 1870/71.
This cross was awarded to persons who did not pay attention to status, distinguished by well-deserved achievements in the field of medicine, but especially in the care of wounded and sick soldiers and their transportation. Proposals for awards were submitted to the Grand Duke through ministries and through the command of mobile and deputy army divisions. It should have accurately described the act to be rewarded. A total of 911 crosses were awarded. The Stämpelschneider was the twine of H.H. at the Darmstadt Mint. The crosses were made of bronze. The award was non-refundable.
On August 12, 1914, a bronze ribbon was established for the cavaliers of the Military Sanitary Cross of 1870, who distinguished themselves during the 1914/18 war again in the sanitary business. The band has a size of 6 x 40 mm. The edges are raised, and in a fine-grained field, the date of 1914 is indicated as an inscription. Source: J.
