Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig resumed this through his grandfather Ludwig III. In 1870, the Military Medical Cross was established on August 12, 1914. It was awarded, as in 1870, to persons who did not reckon with a position distinguished by well-deserved achievements in the field of medicine, but especially in the care of wounded and sick soldiers and their transportation. In addition, it was found that sanitary officers and non-commissioned officers, as well as soldiers, are awarded a cross on the military ribbon of the medal "For Courage." Civilians carried a cross, as before, on a red ribbon with silver side stripes. By the end of the war, due to a lack of material, the crosses were made of wartime copper metal (zinc). At the same time, for the cavaliers of the military sanitary cross of 1870, who during the war of 1914/18. again distinguished themselves in the sanitary business, a bronze ribbon was established. The band has a size of 6 x 40 mm. The edges are raised, and in a fine-grained field, the date of 1914 is indicated as an inscription. Source: J.
