This medal was established on the birthday of Grand Duke Ludwig I, father of Ludwig II, on June 14, 1840. All soldiers who were in the Grand Duke-Hessian service and participated in the campaign as combat or non-combat forces could receive this field service mark.
Made from old Hessian guns. Stempelschneider was Professor H.H. Schnitzspiegen. A total of 30,287 copies were issued. Participants in the campaigns of 1780-1866 had the right to admission. Due to the large number and need for second and spare parts, official overprints were made from 1842 to 1867. Differences exist, among other things, in the missing item for 14 in the date of foundation. Source: Jörg Nemmergut, German Orders and Insignia until 1945, Volume 1
