German Awards - German States - Lippe-Detmold - Principality

The imperial county of Lippe was elevated to the status of a principality in 1789. For a long history, Lippe was a member of the Rhine Union, until 1866 - the German Union, and since 1866 - the North German Union under the Prussian leadership. Since 1871, the principality was part of the German Empire. In 1919, it was transformed into a democratic free state.
It was located in present-day North Rhine-Westphalia and was an independent state until 1948. The capital was Detmold.
The princes were:

  • Prince Leopold I (1789-1802)
  • Prince Leopold II. (1802-1851)
  • Prince Leopold III. (1851-1875)
  • Prince Voldemar (1875-1895)
  • Prince Karl Alexander (1895-1905)
  • Prince Leopold IV. (1905-1918)

The national emblem of Lippe depicts the Lippe Rose, which is also found on many orders. Due to the small size of the principality (about 145,000 inhabitants in 1905), orders are very rare and expensive.
