The buckles were donated by Prince Paul Friedrich Emil Leopold III. for non-commissioned officers and soldiers of his military and gendarmes after 20 and 10 years of service. The reward for service for 10 years was an iron buckle on a yellow ribbon with red side stripes. For 20 years of service, a silver buckle on a red ribbon with yellow side stripes was granted. The awards were presented by Militarreffekten J.R. Sterbel in Berlin. These awards were given very briefly, until a military convention with Prussia on 1 October 1867. Until that time, the principality had only one infantry battalion for maintenance. Because of this, the awards are megasertle. Only 92 iron buckles were granted in 10 years, and only 71 silver buckles in 20 years.
