The medal "For Military Merit" with swords on the front of the medal was supplemented on December 17, 1914 by Prince Leopold IV. introduced. The 1st edition Military Merit Medal, without swords, was awarded twice more during the World War in 1915. The medal with swords was no longer refundable. Only when awarded the Cross of Military Merit did the medal have to be returned. The manufacture of medals was carried out by the court jeweler K.F. Zimmerman in Pforzheim. Medals vary in thickness from 2.3 to 2.9 mm and in weight from 17.3 g to 21.3 g. The medal was awarded more than 1900 times. Delivery includes a document with by-laws printed on the back.
The new embossing, in addition to minor deviations, depicts crossed, antique swords at the bottom of wreath 2. Non-commissioned officers and privates (soldiers) of the III degree were awarded. A battalion of the 55th Infantry Regiment (6th Westphalian) and Lipp soldiers in other units who became unfit for service due to a minor injury or illness that arose in the field and were not awarded the Iron Cross or offered for awarding.
