The princely Lipp Order was created on October 25, 1869 by two rulers of princely houses Leopold III. established by Lippe-Detmold and Adolf I Georg Schaumburg-Lipp as a common order of the house. It originally consisted of 3 classes and 2 merit medals. In 1887, the statutes were changed and the 4th class was introduced, as well as swords for military merit and oak leaves for especially outstanding merit. In 1890, the Schaumburg-Lippe line established a separate order. The Lippe-Detmold line retained the originally common order, but changed the shiffre on the reverse from - LA - for Leopold and Adolf to - L - for Leopold. The 2nd class with swords in the 1st World War was awarded only 24 times. The manufacturers were Carl Büsch, Hannover, Godet & Sohn, Berlin, as well as Zimmermann of Pforzheim. The crosses were made hollow in gold and silver with gilding. Manufacturer crosses have variations in size and weight. Weight ranges from 44 g (Gode) to 49.5 g (Zimmerman). The size varies from 64.4 mm x 57 mm (Gode) to 73.4 mm x 64 mm (Zimmerman).
