The medal was established on the occasion of an arbitration award on October 25, 1905 by Prince Leopold IV.
The reason was unresolved claims to the throne for the principality. Prince Alexander died childless on January 13, 1905. On the one hand, the Lippe-Bisterfeld line, and on the other, Prince Adolf Schaumburg-Lippe demanded the throne. By the decision of the imperial court, the Lippe-Bisterfeld line was recognized as hereditary. Leopold, son of Ernst Lippe-Bisterfeld, became Leopold IV. succession to the throne. Everyone who contributed to this goal received a commemorative medal. The medals were made by Richard Diller in Dresden. Medals were made of bronze and tombac with gilding.
