Awards of Germany - German States - Saxe-Coburg-Gotha - Duchy

The duchy arose in 1826 as a result of the reorganization of the Ernestine duchies.
The rulers of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg left no heir, so a new division was required. This was done by arbitration decision of Frederick Augustus II. King of Saxony.
The Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha arose in its main parts from the earlier Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (without part of the state of Saalfeld) and the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha and some departments of the Duchy of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
The duchy was a dual duchy ruled by a duke. Many institutions and institutions have existed twice, once in Gotha and once in Coburg.
The unification of the two duchies was not carried out.
In 1834, the duchy joined the German Customs Union, and in 1866 - the North German Union led by Prussia. Since 1871 it was part of the German Empire. The dukes were:
  • Ernst I in 1826-1844
  • Ernst II. 1844-1893
  • Alfred 1893-1900
  • Crown Prince Ernst II 1900-1905
  • Karl Edward 1905-1918

After World War I and the abdication of the princes, Gotha became a free state in Thuringia, and Coburg became a free state in Bavaria.
