The ducal Saxe-Ernestine Order was named Comtur 1. He was awarded the order with a cross and the corresponding breast star. Komtur 2. The class received only the cross of the order. Pectoral stars were produced by different manufacturers. There are differences in size and design. They differ from each other, for example, in the shape and number of individual rays. They can be smooth with pearl or cord-like edging, or also shiny. Intermediate rays range from 13 to 9 and have varying degrees of gradation toward the center. The breast star shown here is from manufacturer Paul Meybauer, Berlin. He produced awards for Saxe-Coburg and Gotha between 1919 and 1935, when Duke Carl Edward of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha resumed the awards.
The Order of the Ernestine Duchies was established on March 25, 1833 jointly by 3 Dukes Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Friedrich of Saxe-Altenburg and Bernhard Erich Freund of Saxe-Meiningen. Initially, the order consisted of 4 classes: Grand Cross, Komtur 1st class, Komtur 2nd class and Knight. Knights 2nd class were added around 1890. Foreigners could also be awarded the order. This required the consent of at least 2 duchies. The awards of the other classes were equally distributed among the 3 duchies. Until 1864, crosses were indicated by letters on the upper cross sleeve. F for Altenburg, E for Gotha and B for Meiningen. Foreigners received crosses without an oak wreath around the medallion. From 1890 to 1913, 202 Komtur 1st class awards took place, from 1919 to 1935 another 63 awards were indicated for Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Source: J.
