For the first time, medals for "merit in civilian life" were presented on January 30, 1835 by Duke Ernst I. These medals had a wide ironing eye and a size of 39 mm. They were awarded gold, silver and bronze in 3 degrees. Medals were awarded only on 2 1837. The stamps were made by Professor Ferdinand Helfricht. From 1837 to 1858, smaller medals (24 mm) were awarded. The bronze step is no longer known. The front side is rewritten with hyphens between Saxony - Coburg - Gotha. Starting in 1858, medals in gold and silver were supplied with an ordinary eye and a ribbon ring. The name "For Art and Science" began to be used from 1856. Rewriting now again with the word "and." The stamps were again made by Professor Helfricht. In 1860, the Cross of Merit was established as the highest level for medals. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol.
