Awards Germany - German States - Hesse-Kassel - Elector

The Elector of Hesse-Kassel, also called Kurhessen, was relatively short-lived from 1814 to 1866. It arose from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel. In 1803, Hesse-Kassel became elector. From 1806 to 1813, Kassel was the main city of the Kingdom of Westphalia. After the defeat of Napoleon at the Vienna Congress, Elector dignity was renewed. In the war of 1866, Kurhessen was on the side of Austria and was subsequently occupied and annexed by Prussia.
The three rulers were:
  • William I.
  • William II
  • Friedrich Wilhelm
who, after the Prussian annexation, went into exile.

The most famous order was the Order of the Iron Helmet.
