This award was established on March 14, 1821 by Elector Wilhelm II. established by Hesse-Kassel. The goal was to reward the valor and loyalty of soldiers and subjects in 1814, 1815 in the struggle for the independence of Germany. This medal was awarded to all fighters and subjects who fought under the domestic flag and crossed the Rhine in 1814 and 1815 and were not guilty of any shameful misconduct or desertion. Violations that fell under it were recorded in December 1821. This award, by order of the elector, from July 1821 in a modified form was also awarded to non-combatants.
The seal of the medal was made by the coin engraver Wilhelm Körner the Younger. He worked in Kassel from 1804 to 1833.
