Awards Germany - German States - Bremen - Hanseatic City

Bremen was first mentioned in 782. In 965, Bremen received market rights from Emperor Otto and early became a trading city. Since 1358, Bremen has been a member of the Hansa, and in 1646 received city law. In 1806, Bremen became a sovereign state and a free Hanseatic city.
In 1827, Bremerhaven was founded to again have free access to the sea, because Weser was increasingly sent by sea. In 1849, Bremen received a democratic constitution and joined the North German Union in 1866. Since 1871, Bremen was part of the German Empire, but was nevertheless a free city. Only in 1933, under the National Socialists, the city lost its independence. Like many cities, Bremen was also hit hard by air raids. In 1946, self-government was restored. To this day, Bremen is a free and Hanseatic city, as well as (with Bremerhaven) its own federal state of Germany.
