Awards Germany - German States - Hamburg - Hanseatic City

The first mention of the place dates back to 808, when Charlemagne founded a base called Hammaburg. In 831, the place became the seat of the Archbishop of Ansgar. City law was granted to Hamburg as a reward for support in the 3rd Crusade (1189). In 1241, Hamburg entered into a defensive alliance with Lübeck, and in 1249 with Bremen, from which the Hansa later arose. In 1510, Hamburg was officially given the title of a free Hanseatic city.
From 1806-1811 Hamburg was occupied by Napoleonic troops. In 1815, Hamburg joined the German Union. In 1842, a fire devastated much of the town. In 1921, Hamburg received a parliamentary-democratic constitution. In 1938, the cities of Altona, Harburg and Wandsbeck were incorporated into Hamburg. During World War II, Hamburg was badly destroyed by Allied bombing. In 1949, Hamburg again became an independent city-state of the Federal Republic and still bears the name of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
