German Awards - Silver Medal of Salvation since 1918
The Hazard Rescue Medal, created in 1908, measured 42 mm and was not portable. By decision of the Senate of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, this medal was replaced by a portable one. People who risked their own lives to save another life were awarded. Citizenship of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg was not a prerequisite for the award.
Round silver medal. Above is a soldered ordinary eye with a ribbon ring.
Front side:
- At the bottom is a smooth field about 1/4 of the medal. It has a 2-line Gothic font:
- - FOR - RESCUE - FROM -/- DANGER -. Remaining 3/4 medals with a margin.
- The upper 3/4 with a wide recessed ring inwards are bordered by a thin raised line.
- On the ring is the inscription: - ° - FREE - ° - AND - ° - HANSEATIC CITY - ° - HAMBURG - ° -.
In a surrounded - field is the Hamburg state coat of arms. (shield on pedestal holding
- from 2 lions looking to the sides. On the coat of arms is a knight's helmet with decorations.)
Downside:
- The back side with a wide smooth edge.
In - a closed field, a man kneeling to the right, entwined with tentacles.
- Each of the two arms holds one arm of the polyp.
Tape:
red 32 mm wide, white edges 1 mm, white side stripes 5 mm.
