Awards Germany - German States - Lübeck - Hanseatic City

Lubeck is mentioned already in the XI century, and fortified in the XII century. After being destroyed by fire, it was re-founded by Henry the Lion in 1157. In 1226, Lübeck became a free imperial city. In 1358, Lübeck became the leading Hanseatic city and mastered trade in the Baltic. Lübeck's importance declined more and more over time. Other cities such as Danzig and Szczecin, as port cities on the Baltic Sea, gained influence, and with the construction of the North Baltic Sea Canal in 1895, Lübeck lost some of its trading function to Hamburg and Bremen. Thanks to the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, the economy received a new impetus.
In 1937, Lübeck became part of Schleswig-Holstein and is still a Hanseatic city and a city without districts.
