Awards Germany - German States - Nassau - Duchy



The Duchy of Nassau arose in 1806 and lasted only until 1866. The capital was first Weilburg, then Wiesbaden. Under pressure from Napoleon, the territories of that time were united. Prince Friedrich August of Nassau-Usingen and his cousin Friedrich Wilhelm of Nassau-Weilburg entered the Rhine Union on July 17, 1806. Subsequently, Prince Frederick Augustus, as the eldest of the house of Nassau, was awarded the ducal honor. Friedrich Wilhelm received the title of sovereign prince of Nassau.
On August 30, 1806, it was decided to create a united duchy. In 1815, the Nassau-Orange Line received the Dutch crown. The tribal territories were ceded to Prussia and partially annexed to the duchy. In the German War, Nassau fought on the side of Austria against Prussia. After the defeat in 1866, Nassau was annexed by Prussia. Nassau, the city of Frankfurt am Main and the Elector of Hesse formed the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau. Duke Adolf was able in 1890 after the death of the Dutch king William III. Inheritance in Luxembourg as Grand Duke. The Nassauer government (Walram line) continues to this day.
