The medal in memory of the battle of Eckernförde was established on July 25, 1849 by the Duke Adolf Nassau. Officers, non-commissioned officers and gunners of the Nassau artillery, who gloriously participated in the battle of Eckernförde, were awarded. The battle took place during the German-Danish war. The Nassau Field Battery, led by Captain Ludwig Müller, was instrumental in the sinking of the Danish warship "Christian VIII" and the capture of "Gephion." On April 5, 1849, Danish troops attempted to land in Eckernförder Bay. In 1848, the defense of occupied Eckernförd was already arranged with 2 separate batteries, consisting of 10 guns. They were under the command of the Prussian captain Jungman. As a reinforcement, the 3rd battery of Nassau artillery with 6 guns was later added. Danish troops totaled 148 ship guns and about 1300 people. The captured ship "Gefion" was repaired and transferred to the Reichsmarine under the name "Eckernförde."
The medal was designed by coat of arms carver Christian Zollman. The award number is 127. Due to the ship's motive, the medal is also in demand among various collectors. Also on the market you can often find fakes. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol. II, 1997.
