The medal was established on December 23, 1815 by Duke Frederick Augustus of Nassau-Usingen. This award was presented in memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the Nassau contingent who participated in the significant battle of Waterloo. The medal was established in gold and silver. The gold medal was awarded only 10 times. All carriers are listed by name. The silver medal was awarded 7,500 times. The stamps were made by Johann Lindenschmith. The duchy participated in the battle with 2 regiments, with the 2nd regiment being formed from Nassau and Orange.
