Freikorps Oberland was founded in 1919 by Rudolf von Sobottendorf, who was chairman of the extreme right-wing Thule Society. The volunteer corps was supposed to defeat the Munich Soviet Republic. In 1920, the Volunteer Corps was deployed during the Uprising at rest. After that, sorties to Upper Silesia followed, as during the capture of St. Annaberg. The Volunteer Corps became known for its brutality as well as other non-combat related killings. Freikorps was part of the black Reichswehr and later became the Oberland Union, which formed the core of the SA in Bavaria in 1921. Former Freikor chief of staff Josef Römer, on the contrary, joined the communist Scheringer circle and actively worked against Hitler until his execution in 1944.
