The Annaberg Cross was established on May 21, 1931 by the former commander of the Oberland Freikorps Ernst Horadam in the 3rd grade. The 1st class was a neck cross, the 2nd class was a plug cross shown here, and the 3rd class was a cross on a ribbon. The reason for the foundation was the 10th anniversary of the assault on Annaberg (a landmark and sanctuary of Upper Silesia). In the battles from May to July 1921 in Upper Silesia (3rd Polish Uprising), Horadam played an important role as commander of the Oberland Freikorps. Only active fighters were awarded. Freikorps Oberland was founded in 1919 by Rudolf von Sobottendorf, who was chairman of the extreme right-wing Thule Society. In April 1919, Horadam took the lead. The volunteer corps was supposed to defeat the Munich Soviet Republic. In 1920, the Volunteer Corps was deployed during the Uprising at rest. Operations in Upper Silesia followed. The Volunteer Corps became known for its brutality as well as other non-combat related killings. Freikorps was part of the black Reichswehr and later became the Oberland Union, which formed the core of the SA in Bavaria in 1921.
