The Military Merit Cross was established on October 23, 1914 by Duke Ernst August and initially consisted only of Odnoklassniki. Awarded without distinction of rank and rank for merit in the world war. A prerequisite was Braunschweig citizenship and possession of the Iron Cross. On November 17, 1915, a Cross was established for non-combatants for services not related to hostilities. The 1st class cross was established on March 20, 1918. A prerequisite for this was repeated outstanding services in the war and preliminary possession of the 2nd class. For the 2nd grade, the Probation Mark was introduced. By the end of the war, crosses began to be made of bronzed military metal. Braunschweig soldiers who served in the Bavarian forces could also be offered the Military Merit Cross if they received the Bavarian Military Decoration rather than the Iron Cross. There are crosses with finely grainy, as well as smooth substrates. Source: J. Nimmergut: Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol. 1, 1997.
