The Military Merit Cross was established on October 23, 1914 by Duke Ernst August and initially consisted only of Odnoklassniki. Awarded without distinction of rank and rank for merit in the world war. A prerequisite was Braunschweig citizenship and possession of the Iron Cross. On November 17, 1915, a Cross was established for non-combatants for services not related to hostilities. The supplier of the crosses was the court jeweler Hermann Jurgens. Production was carried out by Lauer, Nürnberg and Brehmer, Markneukirchen. The 1st class cross was established on March 20, 1918. The condition for this was repeated distinguished service in the war and advanced possession of the 2nd class. Braunschweig soldiers who served in the Bavarian forces could also be offered the Military Merit Cross if they received the Bavarian Military Decoration rather than the Iron Cross. The 1st class cross was awarded 2660 times.
The cross is made of bronze, in the form of an Iron Cross with a raised border. The crosses are slightly curved upward. At the back is a vertical pin.
