The Duchy of Brunswick was founded in 1814. The Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was elevated to a duchy. The first duke was Friedrich Wilhelm. In 1885, the duchy was ruled by Prince Albrecht of Prussia, since Wilhelm, who had ruled before, did not leave offspring. The hereditary Welfs of Hanover did not become dukes in Braunschweig due to Prussian influence. In 1907, after the death of Albrecht, Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg became the Duke of Braunschweig .
Only on November 1, 1913, power again passed into the hands of the Welfs, since Prince Ernst August of Hanover was the daughter of William II. Victoria Louise married.
At the end of 1918, Ernst August was also forced to abdicate, and Braunschweig became a free state within the Weimar Republic.
