German Awards - German States - Waldeck-Pyrmont - Principality

The principality arose from the county that existed since the XIV century.
It consists of 2 spatially separated regions, the county of Waldeck in northern Hesse and the county of Pyrmont in southern Lower Saxony, which came to Waldeck by inheritance in 1625.
To this were added such possessions as Kuylenburg, Tonna, Paland, Wittem and Werth. Count Georg Friedrich was elevated to the princely estate by Emperor Leopold I in 1682. In 1712, Friedrich Anton Ulrich was appointed Emperor Charles VI. in the hereditary princely estate. In 1807, the principality joined the Rhine Union, and in 1815 became a member of the German Union. During the war of 1866, Waldeck-Pyrmont was on the side of Prussia. Due to the high debt, the principality concluded in 1867 an agreement on accession to Prussia, which in fact was equivalent to accession to Prussia, but nominally remained an independent principality. Since 1871, Waldeck-Pyrmont was part of the German Empire.
The princes were:
  • Friedrich Anton Ulrich 1712-1728
  • Karl August Friedrich 1728-1763
  • Friedrich Karl August 1763-1812
  • George I 1812-1813
  • George II Henry 1813-1845
  • Georg Victor 1845-1893
  • Friedrich 1893-1918

In 1918, the last prince of Waldeck was forced to abdicate. In 1929, the Free State of Waldeck was finally incorporated into Prussia as part of the province of Hesse-Nassau. Now it is part of the state of Hesse.
