The cross was renewed by Prince Adolf on November 18, 1914. The cross, like the cross donated by Prince Adolf Georg in 1870, was to serve to recognize the merits of the participants in the war. The cross for faithful service was intended to be awarded to princely persons. Members of the Schaumburg-Lippe house, as well as friendly and allied princes, were awarded. Among them were the king of Bulgaria Ferdinand I and the Sultan of Turkey Mohammad V. Crosses were made as needed and therefore have differences in execution. Some of the awardees also got the second and third parts of the cross. Award dates are given in different ways. Henning Volle lists 25 awards and J. Nimmergut 36. However, production figures are higher due to multiple releases. Crosses were also ordered to change and attach the needle.
