This buckle decoration shown here is a private fabrication of a Landwehr service award. The statutory award was in the form of a buckle. In order to properly depict this award on the large buckle of the order, these enameled products were made.
The Landwehr Award was established on January 16, 1842 by King Frederick William IV. in one class. Only with Landwehr Foundation Service Award 1. In 1868, the Landwehr was renamed 2nd class. The award was given to all officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers who transferred from the 2nd rank Landwehr to the Landsturm. For special merits or merits, the award could already be presented in Landwehr. After the foundation of the 1st class, admission requirements were probably added. Now also a call for active service for at least 3 months or participation in a campaign was considered a possible requirement for Landwehr service distinction (now 2nd class). The question of whether 3 months of active service or participation in the campaign in addition to prescribed service should have been provided is controversial. For a transition into a storm, the total service life is 12 years. They consist of 3 years active duty, 4 years reserve/leave, and 5 years landwehr. Order of Landwehr 1st degree. Only officers and doctors in the officer rank could receive the class. The service reward was non-refundable.
