This commemorative military coin was issued in October 1814 by Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Duchess Louise Leonora of Saxe-Meiningen as regent for Duke Bernhard Erich Freund and Duke Friedrich of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
After a victorious campaign against Napoleon, Duke Ernst I of Saxony Coburg-Saalfeld wanted to get a commemorative military coin for members of the V German army corps. He tried Friedrich Wilhelm III. to obtain permission from Prussia to award a Prussian military commemorative coin also for the V German Army Corps. However, the latter refused, since the Prussian military commemorative coin was to become part of the Prussian troops. Then the duke established his own memorial sign to the linear troops of his country and volunteers of the V German army corps. Two other duchies were invited to join. Those agreed. Individual duchies were awarded medals with different faces. The founders were named on their respective dukedom medals.
The Saalfeld coin was overloaded with production. In Hildburghausen, only the ribbons were issued on 19 October 1814. However, they were still red and white. With the final issue of medals in late 1815 and early 1816, equal striped green/white ribbons were issued for all duchies. According to the late award, the participants of the 1815 campaign were also awarded the medal.
Round silver medal. The edges are enlarged and graduated inward. A wide ironing eye is soldered on top.
