German Awards - German States - Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld - Duchy

The Duchy of Saxe-Saalfeld and Saxe-Coburg arose during the partition of Saxe-Gotha after the death of Duke Ernst I. Saalfeld was ruled by Johann Ernst, and Coburg through Albrecht became both sons of Ernst I. With the death of Albrecht in 1699, after some disputes about the inheritance, the Duchy of Coburg was given to Saxe-Saalfeld. So in 1735 a new duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld arose. The duchy existed as such from 1735 to 1826.
In 1806, the duchy was in the Rhine Union and ruled by Napoleon. In 1813, the duchy fought on the side of the allies against Napoleon. After the extinction of the Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg line in 1825, the Ernestine land was in turn reorganized.
Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld became part of the new Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
The dukes were:
Christian Ernst 1729-1745
Franz Josias 1729-1764
Ernst II. 1764-1800
Franz Friedrich A. 1800-1806
Ernst III. 1806-1826
