Silver Medal "For Military Merit" 1814
- Material: Silver
- Size: 36mm
- Weight: 29g
The Military Merit Medal was established in 1814 jointly by the Dukes Bernhard Erich Freund, Saxe-Meiningen, Duke Ernst I, Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld and Duke Friedrich of Saxe-Hildburghausen. In the war with Napoleon, tributes were to be paid to "valour and valour in the field." This rarest award was presented in gold to officers and in silver, starting with sergeant major. A specially created commission considered all proposals for awarding and took into account not only general courage and military operations, but also attached special importance to the heroic performance of duty and selfless actions in the field. Exceptional rarity is expressed in the limitation of the premium. Each duchy could only award 3 gold and 9 silver medals. The confirmed figures for the award suggest that the maximum amount of compensation has not been exhausted. The medal was awarded a patent. Medals were subject to return after death. The silver medal was awarded only 14 times in Saxe-Hildburghausen and Saxe-Meiningen. Gold medals were awarded 8 awards. It is hardly possible to estimate the price, despite the indication in the OEC.
