The medal was established on December 2, 1899 by the Duke Regent Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He was the brother of the late Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. And headed the government in 1897-1901. The future Grand Duke Frederick Franz IV, his nephew, had not yet come of age and entered the government when he was 19 years old. From 1907 to 1913, Johann Albrecht was regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig. The medal was awarded to veterans of the 1870/71 war who received merits in the Union of Warriors. The design of the medal was based on the Military Merit Medal for 1813-1815. During the war years 1870/71, the medal in memory of the Grand Duchy was not established. The Battle of Loigny on 2 December 1870 took place between the 15th and 17th centuries. French corps against German forces under the command of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These included the 1st Bavarian Corps, the 17th and 22nd Prussian Infantry Divisions, and the 2nd and 4th Cavalry Divisions. The 34th Infantry Brigade consisted of contingents of the Mecklenburg Grand Duchies. After the victorious course of the battle, numerically inferior to the German troops, the French offensive on Paris was stopped. On December 5, Orleans was captured.
