The medal was presented by the Duke Regent Johann Albrecht on April 21, 1897 in memory of the deceased Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. This commemorative medal was received primarily by his entourage and servants, as well as all official participants in the burial ceremony. The dates on the reverse remind of the Grand Duke's birthday on March 19, 1851, taking office on April 15, 1883, as well as the day of death on April 10, 1897. Below is the motto of the Order of the Vendian Crown - PER ASPERA AD ASTRA - Through density to light. Ladies wore a medal on their left shoulder with a bow. There was no duty of return.
