The silver medal depicted here is the 2nd coinage since 1872 with a hip with a strong beard and a signature - KULLRICH - on the rim. The Medal of Merit of the Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II was established in three stages on February 28, 1859 without canceling the Medal of Merit (Honest Man and Good Citizen), established by his predecessor. The medal was awarded to civilians and military persons without observing the rank for good and faithful services for the benefit of the Grand Ducal House and the Fatherland. Further for individual, especially glorious deeds and for outstanding achievements in science, art and trade. The award was made by the Grand Duke himself, for his own reasons, or at the suggestion of the highest authorities. The gold medal was worn as a neck decoration, silver and bronze medals "For Merit" - on the ribbon. After the death of the awarded medal was subject to return.
2 versions of the medal were made. The first series, awarded until 1872, with the bald head of Friedrich Franz II with a cheek and mustache. Bronze medals were gilded. In the cervical department of manufacturers - W.KULLRICH F. -. The second series was awarded from 1872 to 1918 and depicts the founder with a strong beard. In the fields of manufacturers - KULLRICH - (without F.and W.). Wilhelm Kullrich (1821-1867) was from 1850 a royal court and medallist in Berlin. Source: J.
