This medal was officially established after receiving the dignity of the Grand Duke after June 28, 1816, or the medal, donated already in 1798, was equipped with a new front side. Like the older decrypted medal - FRIEDRICH - FRANZ - HERZOG - ZU - MECKLENBURG - the new medal was also awarded in 2 classes, gold and silver. The new coinage was lighter and in decoding shows now - GRAND DUKE -. Gold medals now weigh only 57.8 g instead of 68 g. As for silver medals, the new weight is 31 g instead of 60 g. The size has remained mostly the same. The gold medal "For Merit" was worn around the neck. Medals were also awarded. In 1872, by mistake, medals were minted with the obverse of Friedrich Franz II. They were awarded until 1883. After the mistake was noticed, the remaining medals were melted down. These medals are very rare. Medals depicting Friedrich Franz were borrowed by all successors until 1918. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol. II, 1997.
