The medal was established for the 70th anniversary of Prince Regent Luitpold on March 12, 1905. The medal was to be an outward sign of his unchanging way of thinking. The medal was awarded to all active officers, sanitary non-commissioned officers and warrant officers of the peaceful class, including officers and sanitary officers of the army. All active senior officials of the military administration and owners of Bavarian regiments and a'la suite of Bavarian troops are permanent officers. On June 20, 1905, the circle of recipients was expanded. Now the medal was received by retired soldiers and officials, if they lived in Bavaria.
Also borrowed were still living carriers of the gold and silver medal "For Military Merit." There were 22,033 of them. The medal is minted on the main coin of Munich. The front side belongs to Professor W. von Hildebrand. Impressions are flatter and have differences in facial expression and font.
