The Royal Bavarian Medal of Military Merit in Gold, presented here, is the 2nd minted Type 1 coin. This type was issued after the introduction of the crank press from 1827. The obverse depicts a small chest image of King Maximilian Joseph I, but without canceling the stamp. The rewriting is stronger and further covers the image of the chest. Periods of minting, rolling and issuing may vary. This medal was issued from 1827 to 1871, that is, awarded. Courage can appear as early as 1805-1815. In addition, the acts of 1849, 1866 and 1870/71 were awarded with this coinage. The type with a small breast picture, unlike 1, has a Losch stamp signature, but also occurs with a weak stamp signature and no signature. The main distinguishing feature is the anterior rewrite, which does not extend as far around the breast image. The medals were established by Elector Karl Theodor on October 30, 1794. The medal is awarded in 2nd grade, as a gold and as a silver medal for military merit. The first medals were awarded from 1794 to 1797 with the image of Karl Theodor. The second award period shows Max Joseph as Elector Max Joseph IV. granted from 1799 to 1806. In the period from 1793 to 1805, a total of 45 gold medals "For Military Merit" were awarded. The first medals with King Max Joseph I were issued in 1807. Nevertheless, the charters were as specific as possible. The stamp was carved by Joseph Losch, who worked at the Munich Mint from 1803 to 1826. In addition to the modified inscription... " King of Bavaria" and a portrait of the front side, now on the reverse side there is a royal coat of arms on a shield. From 1807 to 1871, medals were issued with a reduced image of the chest of King Max Joseph I. The medals also have different eyes. Gold medals depicting breasts were awarded 491 times between 1807 and 1871. Between 1807 and 1918, there were 2 different types of embossing, with a small and large portrait of the king's chest. In 1871, medals with an enlarged image of the chest were created by coin medalist Johann Ries. Both medals have coinage options, which are explained by changing coinage tools or updating worn stamps. By royal decree, the Military Merit Medal was renamed the Medal of Courage on March 2, 1918. Source: Walter Kinast, Karlsfeld, published in OMSA (Orders & Medals Society of America), 2023.
