Medal of Remembrance for 1849
- Material: Bronze
- Size: 31mm
- Weight: 20g
This medal was instituted by Grand Duke Leopold on 29 August 1849. The occasion was a grateful recognition of the merits of suppressing the uprising in the Grand Duchy of Baden and a constant reminder of the military merits of the armies and allied forces participating in it. Awards were given to all who participated flawlessly in the last campaign of 1849 against the rebels in Baden. All officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and military officials who entered the Grand Duchy with the army in 1849 to fight the uprising had the right to admission.
This award was especially given to German auxiliaries involved in the suppression of the uprising. The medal was not refundable. There was no official publication or award sheet. There are overprints that lack the letter K under the wreath as a difference. Common ear cues are also known. The Stempelschneider was Ludwig Kahel. (To under the loop)
By officers, these medals were arbitrarily gilded and, thus, were not officially awarded.
During the awarding period, the medal was also derogatorily called fratricidal.
