The Cross of Merit was presented by Grand Duke Frederick Franz IV and Grand Duchess Alexandra, Princess of Britain and Ireland, Duchess of Brunswick and Lüneburg, on 15 November 1912. Men and women, regardless of class, were awarded for services in the field of charity. Civilians who earned money in the war and in the occupied territories on voluntary care for the sick and wounded could also be awarded. Crosses were minted at the Berlin Mint using Professor Sturm's stamp. A total of 951 pieces were minted. For merits in the war he was worn on the ribbon of the Cross of Military Merit. Source: J. A cross made of silver with cruciform sleeves extended outward. Outer sides of crosses are rounded. On the upper cruciform shoulder is a soldered ordinary eye with a ribbon ring.
