The award was established on April 30, 1841 by the Grand Duke Paul Friedrich. Officers of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin contingent were awarded after many years of groundless service. This service award was presented until the conclusion of a military convention with Prussia in 19.12.1872. Gold service award crosses for Mecklenburg-Schwerin officers after 5 years of further service were not assigned again with a different year number, but were equipped with a corresponding new middle backside shield. The old middle shields were replaced by new ones. Crosses with very high numbers are known - XLV - (45 years of service) or - LXV - (65 years of service). In general, the higher the year, the less often you can talk about the cross. Source: J. Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen bis 1945, vol. II, 1997.
The cross is gold or bronze gilded. Cross arms on the edge with a double line. The inner sides are smooth. Front and back with a round central shield (17 mm) worn. On the upper cruciform shoulder there is a soldered eye with a ribbon ring.
