This award was established on September 24, 1914 by the Grand Duke Frederick Augustus. The cross of Frederick Augustus was awarded to soldiers of the Grand Duchy who distinguished themselves in the 1st World War. Among the merits were home merits. Individuals close to the founder and the country could also be awarded for services in the war. This award consisted of 2 classes. The 1st class award was tied to the previous 2nd class award. 1st and 2nd grades of this award have always been together. On September 20, 1918, a ribbon was established for the 2nd grade with the inscription - BEFORE THE ENEMY. It has a raised smooth edge and a grainy interior. The clasp was attached with 2 cotter pins at the back. Dimensions 35 mm x 6.5 mm. The design of the crosses was by Colonel and Adjutant Wing Jordan.
2nd class was awarded about 27,500 times. When awarded at the base of the screed, it was immediately borrowed. Holders of previously awarded crosses could purchase a screed on their own at their own expense.
Crosses of blackened war metal were also awarded towards the end of the war. For home merits, the Cross was awarded on the tape "Not a fighter."
