This award was established on April 23, 1905 by King Frederick Augustus III. For services. Those awarded held the rank of sergeant major to soldier, or were equated to these ranks as civilians. Since April 8, 1910, women have also received awards. For merits in the war from May 22, 1916 they were awarded the same ribbons as the Carola medal. For women it consisted of horizontal oak leaves, and for men it was rectangular with rounded corners. On each inscription - World War 1914/16 -.
The medals were made of bronze. In 1918, copper iron medals were awarded.
Medals were minted by Scharffenberg in Dresden in 1905-1907. Since 1908, medals were minted on the royal Saxon coin in muldenhütten. Up to 1918 240.750 bronze medals and 11,500 medals from (bronze) iron were minted here. The stamps were made by Max Bardulek, a medalist of the Saxon state coin.
