This award was established on September 24, 1914 by the Grand Duke Frederick Augustus. The cross of Frederick Augustus was awarded to soldiers of the Grand Duchy who distinguished themselves in the 1st World War. Among the merits were home merits. Individuals close to the founder and the country could also be awarded for services in the war. This award consisted of 2 classes. The 1st class award was tied to the previous 2nd class award. 1st and 2nd grades of this award have always been together. On September 20, 1918, a ribbon was established for the 2nd grade with the inscription - BEFORE THE ENEMY. It has a raised smooth edge and a grainy interior. The clasp was attached with 2 cotter pins at the back. The project was designed by Colonel and Jordan's adjutant wing. 1st class was awarded about 1,700 times until the end of 1916. Crosses with 2 additional plugs or on a screw disc are also known. Crosses made of blackened non-ferrous metal do not belong to the award period.
