This field service badge was established on February 21, 1854 by the Senate of the Free City of Frankfurt. This award was intended for the fighters of the line battalion. The line battalion was first alerted by the Imperial Minister of War, General von Peiker, and then in August 1848 sent to garrison service in Flensburg. The battalion had a strength of 683 men and was under the command of Major Bush. On December 11, 1848, the line battalion returned to Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, revolutionary efforts were ended with the intervention of the federal army. In 1849, the battalion was deployed to Baden as an order force. The reason was the dispute over the imperial constitution. The operation lasted until August 31, 1849. The battalion commander prompted the establishment of an honorary badge, which was adopted by a decision of the Council of December 29, 1853.
The stamps of the cross were carved by the engraver Johann P. Heinrich from Frankfurt. The number of awards is 612.
