German Awards - Schleswig-Holstein Army Memorial Cross 1848/49
This commemorative cross was established after successful battles with Denmark in 1848 and 1849 by the provisional government on July 2, 1850. These crosses were received by members of the entire Schleswig-Holstein army who participated in the battles. The crosses were made of iron cannons from the battleship Christian VIII. The ship was captured at the Battle of Eckernförde in 05.04.1849. Crosses with and without year dates were awarded. Crosses without annual numbers are less common and more expensive.
The cross is made of blackened iron. Crosses with raised stepped edges. Front side with engraved round central shield. On the upper cruciform shoulder is attached a round eye with a ribbon ring.
Front side:
- On cross sleeves on a smooth bottom on the left - 1848 - on the right - 1849 -.
- Round central shield with raised stepped edge.
- A closed field is divided by a vertical line into two parts.
- On the left is the coat of arms of Schleswig - 2 lions marching to the left above each other.
- On the right on a vertically shaded background is the coat of arms of Holstein.
- One small shield in a third, surrounded by 3 nails and 3 nettle leaves.
